Back in 1984, the Administration at Nu-Roc Community Healthcare decided to make a presentation each month to honor a deserving resident as “Resident of the Month”. The idea was to ensure that each person would have a recent portrait to treasure, as well as a chance to tell his/her life story. The program took off better than anticipated. Twenty five years later, the program is still under way.

The process is simple. The staff at Nu-Roc chooses a deserving resident. Once permission has been received, a professional photographer is brought in for a portrait. Armed with information about that person and his or her history, a staff member or even a family member or friend, writes a short article.

At the beginning of the month, a small ceremony is held for staff and residents. The individual is usually taken by surprise. It is not uncommon to see a wide range of emotions, including pride, humility, and joy. There are often a few tears as the “life story” is read aloud. The portrait is then displayed in a place of prominence at Nu-Roc. At the end of the month, the resident and his/her family are presented with the picture. At the end of the year, a collage, featuring each month’s recipient, is put together. These collages adorn the 3 wing hallway, dating back as many as ten years. Staff, residents, and visitors alike enjoy looking at the pictures and reminiscing about old friends and acquaintances. The pictures are later placed in an album, which is kept in the lounge.

Since its inception, there have been many photographers used. However, about 12 years ago, when TJ Padjen from Lakewood hung out his shingle, he became the official photographer. There has never been a bad picture.

The Resident of the Month program has endured far longer than anticipated. It has become something the residents look forward to every month, as well as a lasting tribute for family members.
