No……….summer can't be over yet!!! It went by way too fast, but the residents at Nu-Roc Community Healthcare made sure to make the best of it. The month of August was especially busy. The facility hosted its annual Senior Picnic at the beginning of the month, and everybody pitched in to help make it a success. The residents stayed busy filling condiment bowls and had a wonderful time making centerpieces for the tables. Using wildflowers and mason jars, giggling, and talking, the hard work felt more like fun. Judging by the number of compliments on the centerpieces, the residents did a great job.
Our monthly birthday party was hosted again this month by the folks from Trinity Lutheran Church in Wabeno. As usual there was cake, ice cream, bingo, prizes, and lots of camaraderie. No wonder it's always a highlight. Later in the month, the family of Evelyn Sayles celebrated her 95th birthday with a special cake and ice cream. Thanks for including us!
We were fortunate enough to be able to attend the Forest County Senior Citizens picnic at Lake Metonga. We were treated to wonderful food, live music, bingo, and a fabulous boat ride. Thanks to all the volunteers, especially the boat drivers, as well as the bus drivers from The Commission on Aging and Forest County Potawatomi. Our residents arrived home at the end of the day very tired but with big smiles…….and some really nice bingo prizes!!
Our crafty activity assistant, Jan, taught us how to make picture frames out of jigsaw puzzle pieces. So cute! Each resident had his/her photo taken to put in the frame. The photos can now be seen hanging in many rooms.
Our second outing of the month brought us into Wabeno to Backhouse Sportsmen's Retreat. We dined on hot beef sandwiches and enjoyed re-visiting an old spot many had been to before. It was interesting checking out all the changes and remodeling that had been made over the years.
It turns out our human resources director is also an avid gardener. We benefited from that in a big way during our cooking club this month. She brought in her bounty of tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. What started out to be salsa soon turned into "just digging in" and eating. Fresh vegetables are truly a treat this time of year.
Ray Ehlinger and his sidekick/wife, Ellen, entertained us one afternoon with the good old Christian and Country music they do so well. A big crowd turned out to sing along and or just listen.
As usual this time of year, we spent a lot of time on our decks just talking and enjoying the weather. One afternoon we had a watermelon seed spitting contest. Much to the surprise of everyone, a very prim and proper lady really let loose and won! Her seed flew a good 15 feet and nearly hit the wall!
So, that's pretty much the end of summer. Now our thoughts turn to fall and all the fun it brings. Thanks to everybody who came to visit, volunteered, or helped us make the most of our summer.
